Lasantha Wickramatunga, editor of the Sri Lankan newspaper The Sunday Leader known for his principled opposition to the government, was assassinated on his way to work by two gunmen on January 8. He knew he was a target of assassins and wrote this essay with instructions that it be published after his death.
